In the Financial Aid Podcast video, the person is aiming the mic at his mouth, not at his chest. Most large-diaphragm condenser mics, like the Samson USB mic shown, are side-addressed, not end-addressed. They pick up strongest from the side, not from the front. The "dead" side of the Samson cardioid mic is not at the back of that mic, but rather on the opposite side.
